History
In January of 2011, KOCE-TV became the full-service PBS station to the Los Angeles Market, delivering your favorite PBS programs as they air nationally. Under the name PBS SoCaL, we have expanded our schedule, viewing area, and services to the entire region. But KOCE has a long and rich history of service to Southern California.
Founded in 1973, KOCE has been Orange County’s public television station for more than 37 years, delivering the best of PBS programming and providing award-winning coverage of local issues and events that matter to our community.
A pioneer in educational television, KOCE was the first station to air college telecourses. Today that legacy continues, providing academic resources to the community with PBS SoCaL Education. Serving K-12 students and teachers in more than 80% of local Schools, PBS SoCaL Education provides new media tools and training that engage students in 21st century learning.
No station in the LA Market has a more powerful transmission than PBS SoCaL. Broadcast from the top of Mt. Wilson, our signal can be seen in LA, Orange, San Bernardino, and Ventura Counties. More than five million people tune in to our programs each month.
In 2007, we created the OC Channel through a partnership with Chapman University, providing Orange County films, programs, and news headlines to residents 24/7. The OC Channel became PBS OC in 2012, providing quality local content while airing PBS award-winning programs to the greater Los Angeles area.
PBS SoCaL produces Real Orange and SoCaL Insider with Rick Reiff, local television programs dedicated to the current issues and events that matter to Southern California, as well as LAaRT, a local program exploring unique arts and culture throughout Southern California and beyond.
