POSITION TITLE: Camp Facilitator
POSITION TYPE: Independent Contractor

PBS SoCal camps reach children in high poverty, at-risk Southern California communities. The camps take place on Saturdays in classrooms or afterschool sites of partnering agencies and utilize PBS KIDS curriculum and media in support of critical science objectives for young learners. The camp will integrate video, games, and hands-on activities to provide kids with opportunities to play, build, explore, and learn together, while getting exposure and practice with the science inquiry and engineering design processes.

The Camp Facilitator will be responsible for the direct implementation and assessment of PBS SoCal’s camp outreach at local nonprofit organizations, school districts, and afterschool programs in Los Angeles and Orange County for children ages 5-8 years old (grades K-3).

Primary responsibilities:

  • Understand the philosophy, approach, and curriculum of PBS SoCal’s camp
  • Establish a safe and engaging environment during the camp
  • Attend orientation training
  • Organize and prepare materials, arrive punctually to camp sites, perform setup and registration duties as needed
  • Facilitate learning for all students enrolled in camp, bring enthusiasm to the learning process
  • Teach and integrate digital media/technology into the camp
  • Ensure that PBS SoCal’s camps are delivered enthusiastically and effectively

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience leading camps, after-school classes, or teaching in a formal or informal setting
  • Ability to demonstrate strong time and classroom management skills
  • Ability to organize time, space, materials, and groups
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience interpreting and implementing curriculum
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Comfortable and knowledgeable on current educational technology practices
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Experience facilitating Summer Camps is a plus but not required
  • Valid CA Driver’s License and dependable transportation to camp sites
  • Live scan and Background Check Clearance


  • A stipend of $750 per completion of the five day camp
