Executive in Charge of Production

PBS SoCal seeks an experienced production executive who is highly organized, motivated, proactive and goal-driven. This individual would be responsible for planning, organizing, directing and leading staff, and for overseeing the station’s local production processes, equipment, materials, etc. 

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

40% Production

  • Responsible for the oversight of PBS SoCal’s editorial and production efforts of televised content for and about Southern California
  • Responsible for the production of 3 weekly shows: LA Art, Studio SoCal, and SciTech Now
  • Responsible for the production of local documentaries and specials, weekly reporting segments, interstitial segments, and other video content
  • Develop and implement a process to attain editorial goals and track editorial goal achievement
  • Manage the overall show schedule and coordinate the day-to-day workflow and post-production. Approve and manage overtime on shows and productions
  • Strategize creative solutions to production challenges to ensure schedules are met
  • Partner with Line Producer(s) to determine current and future personnel needs based on input from appropriate Production Staff. This includes overall crew size and start/finish dates. Flag potential problems in any of these areas
  • Communicate daily with partner studios; troubleshoot issues and potential delays

40% Management

  • Responsible for the recruiting, development, performance management of the local editorial, reporting and production staff
  • Responsible for the information in production reports; including overseeing reporting, analysis and assessment of the report information, identifying gaps that require discussion, identifying and tracking trends, and using insights to address production issues and opportunities
  • Attend pitches and other review meetings with Production Director, Supervising Producer or Art Director to ensure that schedule is moving forward and/or specific issues are addressed
  • Advise Executive Producer(s) and/or Line Producer(s) of any potential problems or issues, particularly those impacting budget, offering solutions when possible
  • Manage Production Staff; delegate to and empower the Production Staff
  • Run production meetings to ensure clear communication, dissemination of information, acknowledge accomplishments and discuss challenges
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to show leadership and production management
  • Responsible for initiatives to develop and maintain crew morale
  • Responsible for the proper introduction of appropriate scheduling tools to the crew
  • Work collaboratively with show leadership, Artists, Recruiters and Human Resources to define and communicate ongoing recruitment requirements

20% Budgeting and Administrative

  • Review creative, and define budgets and content strategy
  • Track and manage all post production related costs, keeping stakeholders apprised of status
  • Strategic leadership of Physical Production, Equipment, Post Production and Media Management teams
  • Manage communication and regular reporting to stakeholders and external clients on all high priority PBS SoCal production budgets, schedules and delivery
  • Work with Chief Financial Officer to create best practice for weekly cost reporting and tracking to senior leadership and key stakeholders  Work to ensure that productions run smoothly, meet deadlines and stay within budget
  • Manage searches and hiring of key production operations staff
  • Identify key vendors to accommodate creative vision and relationships, tax incentives, budget needs, location issues and work with legal to negotiate contractual terms of engagement
  • Establish and maintain/curate preferred vendor list
  • Prepare and present monthly production reports for the Chief Executive Officer
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Familiar with current technology and workflows for both HD and 4K, single cam and multi-cam event
  • Willingness and commitment to continuous learning to ensure understanding of current production process and gear
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to multi-task
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion and compliance with PBS SoCal ethics policies and standards, and an understanding of appropriate level of communications (both written and verbal) when interacting with staff, vendors, etc.
  • Proficiency in Avid, Final Cut Pro, Premiere, Microsoft Word, Excel, Movie Magic Budgeting, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides and Google Mail

Education and Work Experience

  • Master’s degree in Production, Film or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in production content or related field
  • 5+ years’ of production funding experience
