The Story of the Jews National Essay Contest

Posted by Keena Levert

The Story of the Jews National Essay Contest is now underway, giving high school students from across the country the chance to display their writing skills and to win a trip to New York City!

The contest prompts students to, in 500 words or less, “Examine how stories shape our identities.”  What stories have impacted your life? How do these stories influence how you see yourself and the world? How do they tie you to your community?

For historian Simon Schama - writer, and host of The Story of the Jews series - these were important questions to ask and answer, and now the National Essay Contest extends that opportunity to students in grades 9 through 11.

Check out an interview with Simon Schama below from PBS SoCaL's weekly art show LAaRT to hear him speak about his own personal connection to The Story of the Jews

5 grand prize winners will receive The Story of the Jews companion book, personally inscribed by author and host Simon Schama.  These students, along with a parent or guardian, will also be flown to New York City and given a tour of The Jewish Museum by Simon Schama.

To submit your essay, first, read the complete rules here, and then complete the entry form.  All entries must be submitted by Friday, June 13, 2014.  Winners will be notified no later than Friday, August 15, 2014

Encourage a few high school students to share their story today!
