COSTA MESA, Calif. (June 17, 2013) – The California Student Media Festival, in its 47th year of honoring student media creations, held its annual awards ceremony Saturday, June 15, 2013, at The Chinese 6 Theatres in Hollywood, Calif.  The festival is the nation’s oldest student media festival and exists to celebrate the outstanding media and multimedia projects produced by California’s best and brightest students and teachers. 

This year, a total of 66 awards were doled out to 48 elementary and secondary schools representing school districts across the Golden State. Upon receiving the award, students accepted their plaque, and gave an acceptance speech in the style of the Academy Awards. The event was made possible thanks to a partnership between PBS SoCaL and Computer-Using Educators (CUE) Inc, as well as support from seventh-year presenting sponsor, Wells Fargo.

Leading the list of awards recipients were the Grand Prize winning schools, which were chosen to receive a cash grant by submitting the best overall entry in their respective elementary, middle or high school divisions. The Grand Prize selections included a tie for Elementary Overall with Hero’s Choice: An Interactive Movie from Del Sur Elementary of San Diego, Calif. ($500) and What is 100 from Reidy Creek of Escondido, Calif. ($500), a tie for Middle School Overall with The Amulet from Millikan Middle School of Sherman Oaks. Calif. ($500) and World of Photography from Robert C. Fisler School of Fullerton, Calif. ($500), and High School Overall with Chemistry from Cleveland Humanities Magnet of Reseda, Calif. ($1000).
Of the 48 schools to receive recognition, two schools tied for the most individual classroom awards with three each, including Cleveland Humanities Magnet (Reseda, Los Angeles Unified School District) and Minarets High School (O’Neals, Chawanakee Unified School District).

Since 1967, students from grades K-12 across the state have been submitting original video and multimedia projects on a wide-range of curricular subjects for consideration to the festival, vying for recognition of the educators who serve the festival as its volunteer corps of judges.  The Festival strongly encourages project-based learning and meaningful student work in media and multimedia and exists to acknowledge and reward successful classroom work.
