The 7th Annual Gala benefiting PBS SoCaL Education

Honored Peter Asher and The GRAMMY Museum

COSTA MESA, Calif. (May 19, 2014) – PBS SoCaL, PBS for Greater Los Angeles, held its 2014 gala on Saturday, May 17th, to benefit PBS SoCaL’s educational efforts. Total proceeds from the gala are estimated at $1,000,000 and will allow PBS SoCaL to offer more access to early learning resources for children and parents in Southern California.

The seventh-annual gala was hosted by Antiques Roadshow’s Mark L. Walberg and attracted close to 400 supporters of public media to The Hangar Building at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, Calif. The 2014 “Puttin’ on the Glitz” Gala was themed in Old Hollywood Glamour and celebrated leaders from the Arts and Entertainment industry. The evening honored music industry icon Peter Asher and The Grammy Museum represented by Robert Santelli, with a special recognition of the PBS SoCaL’s 2013 Community Champions.

Peter Asher was honored for being an early and ongoing force in popular music.  He is the Founder of the popular British Invasion duo Peter and Gordon. Asher became the first head of The Beatle’s own Apple Records where he signed a young James Taylor. He has been involved in the careers and music of Linda Ronstadt, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Cher, Diana Ross, Neil Diamond, JD Souther, 10,000 Maniacs and many others including Sarah Brightman. Asher is also the recipient of three Grammy Awards, including two as Producer of the Year.

The GRAMMY Museum was honored for its dedication to help students use music as a gateway to learning and as a way to inspire and cultivate creativity and critical thinking. The museum is located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles and debuted in 2008. It is known as an exciting and interactive celebration of the power of all forms of music; the creative process; the art and technology of the recording process; and the history of the GRAMMY Awards.

The 2013 PBS SoCaL “Community Champions,” who were recognized at the gala, are those individuals and organizations that make an extraordinary impact in Southern California communities, including: Lise Luttgens from the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles; Faye Washington from YWCA of Greater Los Angeles: Jose Ramos from Welcome Home to Vietnam Veterans; Deborah Yim from the Assistant United States Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice; Jane Pisano from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County; The Joyful Child Foundation; Reverend Michael Mata; Barbara Carrasco & Harry Gamboa Jr.; and Blaire Baron Larsen & Julia Walker Wyson from the Los Angeles Drama Club.

Opportunities to support PBS SoCaL’s mission throughout the evening included opportunities to bid for unique dinner parties with iconic PBS celebrities, including Newshour's Gwen Ifill, Peter Asher, CBS NEWS Travel Editor, Peter Greenberg, and a Hollywood Animation Experience with Producer Don Hahn. The live auction was followed by a Fund-The-Need campaign, which was introduced by auctioneer Leticia Frye, to support PBS SoCaL’s role as Southern California’s Largest Classroom.

The celebratory event featured a craft cocktail reception with entertainment from the Swing Dolls, 1940’s themed singers. The night ended with an exclusive performance by Peter Asher accompanied by JT & Friends, a talented 55-member ensemble of horns, strings, woodwinds, keyboards, percussion and singers fronted by John Tu.
