Enjoy March Musical Performances

Posted by Mark Mobley

I have always enjoyed watching the musical shows we air on PBS SoCaL like Austin City Limits and Live From the Artists Den. We’ve had some very well known musical groups perform that appeal to a wider audience than who you may think watches PBS. As a mid twenties guy, I would never have expected to see mainstream performers I listen to like Mumford and Sons, Queen of the Stone Age, Adele, The Lumineers, Phoenix, and so many others rocking the stage on PBS SoCaL. There are some more upcoming musical star-powered performances packed into March that I’m planning on watching:

Under the Streetlamp

If you haven’t heard of the band Under the Streetlamp, you’re been missing out. The band is comprised of recent leading cast members of the musical Jersey Boys. The quartet performs classic hits from the 50's, 60's and 70's. My favorite song from the preview video is their smooth sounding rendition of “Do You Love Me.” I wasn’t expecting the guys to have such smooth moves with tap dancing in the show trailer.

You can watch the band perform Wednesday, March 5 at 7:00 PM on “Under the Streetlamp: Let the Good Times Roll.” You can see also Under the Streetlamp perform live in person on Friday, May 2 at the Greek Theatre in LA by reserving your concert tickets online.

IL Volo

Winning hearts across America ever since they entered the music scene, the music group IL Volo continues to perform new renditions of classic and modern songs. You might recognize the three sharp looking young guys by their signature style look and singer Piero Barone’s big red glasses. When I think of the band, those glasses are the first thing that pops in my mind.

Once you hear them, you will know they all have big voices that complement their style. They are will be displaying their multilingual singing abilities with songs in Spanish, French, Italian and English (of course). You can watch their return to PBS by watching “IL Volo: We Are Love” on Thursday, March 6 at 8:00 PM. If you are want to see them perform live, reserve IL Volo tickets to their June 7th concert at the Greek Theatre.

Journey

One of the shows I’m the most excited for is the broadcast of “Journey 2014: Don't Stop Believin'” on Friday March 7 at 9:00 PM. It features a selection of Journey songs from the concert film Live in Manila including other hits “Faithfully,” “Anyway You Want It,” and of course the mega hit “Don’t Stop Believin’.” No doubt at some point in your life you’ve heard or sung this hit song. Or at least you have listened to many karaoke singers belting out those memorable lyrics. Hopefully you don’t overhear me singing it in my car when I’m sitting in 405 traffic. If you can’t tell I’ve been a huge fan of Journey just for that one song alone!

In 2007, Journey was looking for a new lead singer to replace Steve Augeri. The first part of this show’s broadcast explains how the rock band found their new lead singer Arnel Pineda among the many people who auditioned. Learn how Journey band member Neal Schon almost missed discovering Arnel and would have missed out on an awesome vocalist.

There are tickets available for the upcoming Journey concert tour on August 2nd at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine. There is even a pre-show Meet & Greet with the band for the big Journey fans.

You can view the upcoming shows in our online TV schedule. What music specials are you looking forward to this month? What's your favorite PBS SoCaL music show? Let us know what you think of the music programs on PBS SoCaL’s Twitter, Facebook and Google+ pages.
