Local PBS SoCaL programs for July

Sizzling summertime shows! It’s our line-up of locally originated and produced programs, presented by PBS SoCaL.

A daughter’s promise to tell her mother’s story, the life of celebrated ballerina Mia Slavenska, becomes a moving reflection on historical memory, national identity, and the power of dance. Slavenska was an expatriated artist who was Croatia’s greatest dancer and then, as part of a handful of dancers, changed the face of American culture bringing ballet to every corner of the nation. Mia, a dancer’s journey returns to the PBS SoCaL plus schedule Thursday, July 2 at 11pm, and Friday, July 3 at 8am and 3pm. Please visit the Mia web page for more information.

The Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Journey to Joy follows talented Southern California teenagers as they prepare to perform Beethoven’s iconic 9th symphony. Enjoy this music-filled special Saturday, July 4 at 7pm on the PBS SoCaL plus channel.

You have another chance to catch all five episodes of China’s Challenges this month. The season two episodes explore with unique access and in cinematic detail how China is tackling critical issues, including disparities in wealth and education, social clashes, severe pollution, competing priorities, and tensions between China’s rich traditional culture and its rapidly modernizing society. Back to back episodes will air Saturday, July 11 at 1pm and 2pm, Saturday July 18 at 1pm and 2pm, and the final episode will air Saturday, July 25 at 1pm. The Drive-By Economist Doug Kriegel visits an LA neighborhood that has the hottest real estate market in California and it is right next to one of the poorest areas in America. The Wedge: Dynasty, Tragedy, Legacy documentary explores the moving personal story of how a young boy's tragic mistake results in the development of an engineering marvel that inadvertently creates one of the most famous surfing wonders of the world. Don’t miss this program Tuesday, July 21 at 7:30pm.

Acclaimed actors discuss their current TV projects and more on Variety Studio: Actors on Actors. The season two episodes feature conversations between Clive Owen (The Knick) and Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Jessica Lange (American Horror Story) and Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black), and Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Honourable Woman), among others. Variety Studio: Actors on Actors will air Saturday, July 25 at 2pm and 3pm, and will air again Tuesday and Wednesday July 28 and 29 at 7pm.
