Documentary Profiling Legendary California Public Servant Premieres Nationally On Public Television’s World Channel

The story of Ed Edelman brings to life the impact of his contributions

to the Southern California community and beyond.

COSTA MESA, Calif. (July 7, 2014) – Public Television’s WORLD Channel will present “The Passions and Politics of Ed Edelman: An Untold Story of Leadership” on Wednesday, July 30th at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. Narrated by award-winning newsman Tom Brokaw, the documentary tells the dramatic story of a political icon, Ed Edelman, who transformed the fabric of politics, culture, and community in Southern California.

Former Los Angeles City Councilman and Supervisor Edelman began a 30-year crusade in politics in the 1970’s when he took on the thankless job of advocating for the homeless, the mentally ill and abused and neglected children. He was one of the first elected officials in the nation to champion civil liberties for gay Americans and to call for reforms within a sheriff’s department rife with abuses. Edelman spearheaded the creation of the first County Department of Children and Family Services in the country, the Children’s Court, as well as the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Produced by filmmaker Mari Edelman, Ed’s spouse, the film tells the engaging story of politics, power, and civil rights, and depicts spirited, uphill political battles, revealing Edelman’s unique ability to succeed in a politically hostile environment through the power of personal relationships and consensus building.  The story is told using vivid archival footage, still images and commentary from luminaries such as former Massachusetts Governor, Michael Dukakis, historian Kevin Starr, architect Frank Gehry and theater director, Peter Sellars.

LA Times columnist Steve Lopez writes “what better time to be reminded of an era when politics could be the realm of someone whose primary motive was public service.”

PBS SoCaL is the national presenting station for the documentary and premiered the show locally in Los Angeles in January of 2013. WORLD Channel is releasing the program nationally as part of a month of Democracy themed programming in July.
