PBS SoCal Presents Montage: Great Film Composers And The Piano A Documentary Sharing Today’s Best Film Composers And New Works For Solo Piano

Film Premieres Monday, May 22 at 7:30 pm

Los Angeles, Calif. (April 26, 2017) – PBS SoCal is pleased to have the broadcast premiere of  Montage: Great Film Composers and the Piano, Breakwater Studios’ special look at the challenge Grammy award-winning pianist Gloria Cheng presented to a group of celebrated film composers: to write a piece of music for solo piano.

Some of today’s best-known film composers took part including: John Williams (Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial), Bruce Broughton (Silverado, Young Sherlock Holmes), Don Davis (The Matrix trilogy), Michael Giacchino (Up, Ratatouille, Rogue One), Randy Newman (The Natural, Toy Story, Monsters, Inc.), and Alexandre Desplat (The Queen, Argo, The Grand Budapest Hotel).

“We are honored to share the piano compositions of some of Los Angeles’ best film composers through this unique documentary,” said Andrew Russell, PBS SoCal President and CEO. “Music touches something in us all whether accompanied by an orchestra and pictures – like in the movies — or simply through a single instrument like the piano.”

“It’s so rare to get to see anyone of this caliber brave enough to work outside of their wheelhouse,” said executive producer Ben Proudfoot of Breakwater Studios, “I can’t wait for people to enter this intimate world and see how these venerable and vulnerable maestros bring fresh music to life through Gloria’s immense talent.”

“The composers whose music I am privileged to showcase are living legends who are best known for their film work. I was interested in how they write when unhinged from the demands that a film places on them,” said Gloria Cheng.
