California’s Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) estimate juvenile detention centers currently cost $300,000 per youth per year. In addition, the outcomes for the youth housed in these facilities are poor. In 2012, a report found three quarters of the youth who leave these facilities return with in three years. But efforts are being made to change this situation.
