The Native people living along the Pit River earned their name because they would dig traps along the river. When the settlers came through the area that now comprises north-eastern California, they lost horses and cattle in pits, so they named the river and people by the same name. Ray Alvarez explains the delicate balance that is needed to maintain the landscape, species and overall ecosystem.
