SoCal Update

$2B School Reopening Plan; WeHo Opens Street Space | Feb. 19

On the Feb. 19 episode of SoCal Update, state lawmakers have a $2-billion proposal to reopen schools, plus, the city of West Hollywood creates more space for people to walk, bike — and eat outside.

KPCC Reporter Caroline Champlin reports that California lawmakers are planning to present a bill on Monday to incentivize schools to reopen. The bill will offer vaccines for educators and $2 billion for school districts that open in-person instruction for students with high needs, including students experiencing homelessness and those with disabilities.

KPCC Reporter Ryan Fonseca explains that West Hollywood is the latest local city to rethink open space, with plans to close a quarter mile of Robertson Boulevard to cars. City leaders and law enforcement say the goal is to make the space safer for everyone — promoting social distancing and allowing businesses more room to operate safely. The three-month pilot program takes effect in mid-April.
