The film is based on Shelby Van Pelt’s debut novel phenomenon. It remains on the New York Times bestseller list, and has sold over 3.5 million copies to date. The book is a rare grassroots success story, with sustained popularity attributed to enthusiastic booksellers, and powerful word-of-mouth recommendations by readers. Actor Sally Field was in Van Pelt’s mind when she wrote the novel. Tova, portrayed by Field in the film, is based on the author’s Swedish grandmother.
Immediately following the screening, Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on PBS SoCal's Must See Movies, moderates a Q&A with director Olivia Newman.
