The War
The 1943 Mobile Shipyard Riot
On May 25, 1943, after Alabama Dry Dock agreed under federal pressure to let 12 Black workers become welders, white employees attacked Black colleagues across the shipyard. Many escaped by jumping off the piers into the river. The compromise that followed segregated the yard itself, a result the Pittsburgh Courier denounced as a victory for Nazi racial theory.
