Family Math — Play & Learn App Learning Goals & Curriculum Alignment

Grounded in research and aligned to the California Preschool/Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF) and the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework (ELOF), the Family Math — Play & Learn app is designed to support children’s development across six foundational math domains for children ages 3-5:

1. Number Sense & Counting

Learning Goals

Children will:

  • Count to tell how many objects are in a group
  • Identify without counting the number of objects in a group (subitize)
  • Recognize and name numbers from 1 to 10
  • Understand that every object in a group gets one count (one-to-one correspondence)
  • Understand that the last object counted in a group represents the total amount (cardinality)

Curriculum Alignment

PTKLF Strand 1.0 – Counting & Cardinality

  • Foundation 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4

ELOF Sub-Domain – Counting & Cardinality

  • Goal P-MATH 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

2. Measurement

Learning Goals

Children will:

  • Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length and weight
  • Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common to see which has “more of” or “less of” the attribute
  • Use non-standard units of measurement to measure and compare objects

Curriculum Alignment

PTKLF Strand 3.0 – Measurement and Data

  • Foundation 3.1, 3.2, 3.3

ELOF Sub-Domain – Measurement

3. Shapes

Learning Goals

Children will:

  • Identify familiar two- and three-dimensional shapes
  • Identify the shape's attributes, such as sides and angles (corners)
  • Count the number of sides and angles to determine what shape it is
  • Combine and separate shapes to make new shapes

Curriculum Alignment

PTKLF Strand 4.0 – Geometry and Spatial Thinking

  • Foundation 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.6

4. Patterns

Learning Goals

Children will:

  • Understand that patterns follow a regular structure and rules for repeating
  • Make patterns with sounds, words, objects, colors, numbers, and routines
  • Extend or create alternating patterns (e.g., ABAB)

Curriculum Alignment

5. Sorting & Collecting

Learning Goals

Children will:

  • Identify objects’ characteristics (attributes) like size, shape, and color
  • Sort objects into groups based on the same or different attributes
  • Sort objects by more than one attribute (e.g., by size and color)

Curriculum Alignment

6. Spatial Sense

Learning Goals

Children will:

  • Describe features of objects in space (e.g., tall, large, long)
  • Identify where objects are in relation to one another (e.g., between, next to, behind)
  • Describe how objects move (e.g., across, over, backward)
