PBS SoCal to Distribute 5,000 Books to Local Students
COSTA MESA, Calif. (September 10, 2015) – To help welcome students back to school, PBS SoCal will distribute 5,000 free early-learning books to Southern California children. The books will be distributed in partnership with PBS SoCal's local education and nonprofit partners.
PBS SoCal will host back to school events during the month of September to distribute backpacks filled with books to help families build their own home libraries. The events will take place at the following partner organizations:
- Boys and Girls Club of Tustin on September 10
- Project Access in Anaheim on September 15
- Stephen C. Foster Elementary School on September 16
- East Los Angeles College Development Center on September 17
- Pacoima Charter Elementary School on September 18
"We are committed to supporting the development of early literacy skills by making media resources available, especially during the summer months and the back-to-school season," said Jamie Myers, PBS SoCal Vice President of Education and Community Engagement. "Studies show that books in the home are convenient and accessible vehicles for learning – plus create opportunities for parents to engage with their children."
This campaign is made possible by a generous donation from PBS KIDS, Overstock.com, The Molina Foundation, and The Angels Baseball Foundation. PBS SoCal provides free PBS KIDS resources to Southern California communities all year long on-air, on-line, and in the community. Educational activities and resources are available at PBSSoCal.org/Kids.
