Kinship: Marines on Iwo Jima
Marines Bill Lansford and Pete Arias had fought in the Pacific since 1942 with Carlson's Raiders, but nothing prepared them for Iwo Jima. Lansford feared he would lose his mind under the shelling. Wounded after taking out a pillbox, Arias survived only because a corpsman he never knew threw himself over him and took the full blast.
