'The Liberation,' a Psychological Drama at the Fall Cinema Series
Filmmaker Guy Nattiv shared that the film was inspired by his grandmother, Rita Cooper, a Holocaust survivor from Poland and the sole survivor of her large family.
"In the 1980s, when Rita was 45 and struggling with the depression that had followed her throughout her life, she met a young woman, they began spending time together, exploring spirituality and a different way of living. She became a different woman, freer, more liberated, and, at least from the outside, happier. But as a child, I watched my family break into pieces.
Today, we understand that my grandmother had become involved in a cult. We never really knew what had happened to her."
Immediately following the screening, Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on PBS SoCal’s Must See Movies, moderates a post screening with director/writer/producer Guy Nattiv .
