In Between

internetnoise

How far can you push yourself before you start wandering in circles around the piles of print outs on your desk? When do you start forgetting to shut the fridge door and taking the keys out of your front door? How far have you extended yourself? Is your nickname Gumby?

I am up at the crack of dawn, I check my email and then I go to Spin at YAS in Silverlake. After the class I turn around and head home to feed the dogs, water the plants, make a pot of coffee and sit down for the next 7-9 hours to work.

In between the moments of constant activity, I roll back from my desk and wander outside to the garden. I stand there motionless, gazing at the figs in the trees, the sweep of bamboo down at the hedge, the dogs lay at my feet waiting for a signal to run for their toys, I take a deep breath and head back in.

How do we cope in a world of constant noise? The beeping of our Blackberries, the pings of iPhones, the jumping Alert icons on our desktops to the constant underlying white noise that accompanies the electric world around us, we are surrounded by invisible hands grabbing at our attention. We answer back to the best of our abilities, but the question to ourselves is did we reply correctly or will I have to do that again?

Walk away for a small moment and experience the silence that we have learned to love since the dawn of time, before all the man made noise we created to keep us busy. Just say "Quiet, we are thinking....", no one will think less of you.
