Hijabistas

They're called hijabistas, Muslim-American fashionistas decked in traditional and trendy headscarves delicately covering their hair.

The hijab, traditionally worn by Muslim women around the world, is a symbol of respect, and follows the traditions of Islam. Women are required to dress in a modest fashion, as KCET's Artbound writes.

In an effort to create a space for creative expression, local designers in Orange County have created a line of fashionable wear with a trendy twist. The goal is to maintain Islamic traditions, but also allow Muslim women the freedom to express themselves through beautiful silk chiffon fabric from different manufacturing sites in downtown Los Angeles and other regions in Southern California.

KCET columnist Lilledeshan Bose introduces us to hijabistas and the women behind designer hijab lines in this Artbound segment for "SoCal Connected."
