Did you know that Women's History Month was born in California? In 1978, hundreds of students — in the school district of Sonoma — participated in a "Real Woman" essay contest and a parade in downtown Santa Rosa. In 1981, Congress and the President passed a law to proclaim the week of March 7, 1982 as "Women’s History Week."

Lastly, in the late 1980s, March officially became "Women’s History Month," and Congress passed additional resolutions to recognize every March as the month to celebrate the often-overlooked contributions of women in society.
