Arts Preview: September 16, 2010
This week in Southern California Arts:
Thursday, September 16, 8:00 p.m.
Saturday, September 25, 4:00 p.m.
The beach will be home to a range of spectacular artworks on display from dusk until dawn as Santa Monica gears up for another Glow event on September 25. You can get a taste of light and interactivity by visiting Brandon Lattu's "Reciprocity of Light." As you move through the piece, your shadow triggers light-sensitive cells that alter patterns of light. Outside of Glow, you can find the L.A.-based artist's new interactive artwork in Glassell Park. An opening event slated for Thursday, September 16, from 8:00 - 11:00 p.m. If you can't make it then, you have until October 16 to experience Lattu's piece, Wednesdays and Saturdays, 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Friday, September 17, 7:00 p.m
The Hench-DADA Animation Division at USC will feature a showcase of student work in animation at the USC Norris Theater.
Sunday, September 19, 7:30 p.m.
The Los Angeles Filmforum will screen a second iteration of short works collected under the title "Festival of (In)appropriation." The works feature reconfigured meanings that emerge from appropriated artworks may, at times, be counter to original intentions and hence "inappropriate." One particularly interesting short in the mix is A Movie by Jen Proctor, a "loving remake" of A Movie, Bruce Conner's amazing 1958 found footage film.
Monday, September 20, 8:30 p.m.
Alternative film screenings this week also include the debut of a new film by iconic L.A. filmmaker Nina Menkes. Titled Hitparkut (Dissolution), the film was inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, and screens at REDCAT.

Tuesday, September 21, 7:00 p.m.
The Hammer Museum presents the Paris-based artist Eric Baudelaire with his 72-minute video Sugar Water, which watches as a sequence of posters is mounted on a billboard, each on depicting steps in an act of violence. Baudelaire will talk with art historian George Baker following the screening.
Wednesday, September 22, 7:00 p.m.
Head over to Art Center to see Sam Green perform a "live documentary" in collaboration with musician Dave Cerf. Titled Utopia in Four Movements, the project is described by Green as "a response to the crisis facing cinema today" as viewers are more apt to watch movies on their computers than collectively as audiences in theaters. For the show, Green speaks and presents slides while Cerf plays music. "This event," says Green "is an attempt to describe utopia and to create a kind of conversation of ideas with the audience." Send a note to mdpinfo@artcenter.edu to reserve a seat.
Thursday, September 23, 7:00 p.m.
You're invited to support the Center for Visual Music as it celebrates the 100th birthday of Elfriede Fischinger, with a benefit art exhibition, reception and screening. Tickets are $40, and the funds will be used to continue preservation and digitization efforts for the Fischinger materials at CVM. The event is hosted in association with the Goethe Institute and the Fischinger Trust. Get your tickets early by calling CVM directly (213-683-1514).

8:00 p.m.
The Hammer will also present Flood Tide: Remixed, a film about handmade boat sculptures that will include a live performance by Dark Dark Dark.
