The Dinosaurs of California’s Lost World For paleontologists, California is mammal country. Where did our dinosaurs go? Not that far away, it turns out.

Dinosaurs in the Southland and from the Pleistocene to Pop Culture Southern California may have been more of a home to colossal prehistoric mammals like mammoths, American lions, saber-toothed cats, and even an ancient bear cousin — which was 11 feet tall on its hind legs — than dinosaurs, but that doesn’t mean we’ve lost our obsession with them since their existence became widely known in the late 19th century.
