In the latest ballot update from L.A. County officials, a bid to extend a transit sales tax still remains behind. Measure J stands at 65.66 percent of the vote, a little over a point away from passage, according to results posted this afternoon.
The measure needs 66.67 percent to pass, and if so, it will push the expiration date of a half-cent sales tax dedicated to transportation infrastructure from 2039 to 2069.
"As we've said before, it's possible but very unlikely that Measure J will pass," wrote Steve Hymon at The Source, a blog for Metro, the agency that stewards the money. Nonetheless, L.A. County Recorder-Registrar/County Clerk Dean Logan has deemed it a "close contest."
