PBS SoCal Wins for “Best News Reporting”
PBS SOCAL WINS FOR “BEST NEWS REPORTING”
Reporter David Nazar Awarded Golden Mike
COSTA MESA, Calif. (Jan. 26, 2015) – PBS SoCaL reporter David Nazar has been honored with a Golden Mike Award by the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California. Nazar was recognized for Best News Reporting for Division B during the 65th Annual Golden Mike Awards Presentation Dinner at the Universal Hilton in Universal City on Saturday, January 24th, 2015.
The Best News Reporting award is given to the individual reporter's enterprise on a single, one-time news story produced by the News Department. The segment that garnered Nazar the honor featured a story about the Los Angeles Unified School District’s homeless population. The news report explored how the Los Angeles Unified School District alone has identified 15,000 children within its boundaries who live on the street or in shelters.
Nazar spent time with Nora Perez, a Los Angeles Unified School District homeless student, who lived in the back of a car while attending a high school in Los Angeles. In the report Nazar shined a light on the district’s program, “Homeless Education Program,” which provides students in need with mental health assistance, wellness centers, tutoring, school supplies and the basic necessities to get off the street.
Nazar’s news report originally appeared on PBS SoCaL’s news and public affairs program, “SoCaL Insider with Rick Reiff.” The segment was also featured on PBS NewsHour and broadcast on PBS stations nationally, as a part of the American Graduate project, a public media initiative funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
