Los Angeles, Calif. – June 6, 2023 – PBS SoCal and KCET, Southern California’s flagship PBS stations, announced today 26 nominations for the 75th Annual Los Angeles Area Emmy® Awards presented by the Television Academy, more than any other LA-based broadcast organizations. The nominations for 10 different programs/series were spread across 11 different categories and honored locally produced productions from both KCET and PBS SoCal. The Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards honor locally produced programs in a variety of categories. An entire sweep in two of the categories – “Arts” (for the arts and culture series ARTBOUND) and “Music Composition,” ensures at least two LA Emmy wins when all 34 categories are presented during a ceremony on Sat., July 22 at the Four Seasons Hotel Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, hosted by award-winning journalist Michaela Pereira.
The locally produced original arts and culture series ARTBOUND received the most nominations with seven in total, highlighting a variety of season 13 episodes that included a tribute to the Asian American pop culture magazine in “Giant Robot,” an examination of one of the first comic book series in the 1980s alternative movement in “Love & Rockets” and a look at the Pasadena-based Marcel Duchamp retrospective of 1963 in “Duchamp Comes to Pasadena.”
The fourth season of food series THE MIGRANT KITCHEN in association with Life & Thyme, an award-winning culinary publication dedicated to documenting global food culture, was also recognized with six nominations. The latest season went beyond Los Angeles to explore booming food scenes across the nation, introducing a new generation of chefs whose cuisine is inspired by the immigrant experience.
While season two of the Emmy and James Beard Award®-winning series BROKEN BREAD (produced in partnership with modern media company Tastemade) garnered four nominations for the season that explored the future of the restaurant industry, highlighting complex social justice issues through the lens of food and featuring notable interviews between Host and Executive Producer Chef Roy Choi with Chef Wolfgang Puck, Restauratrice & Food Activist Alice Waters, Artist & Activist Chuck D. and more.
Additional nominations went to PBS SoCal and KCET content that included environmental series EARTH FOCUS and OFF THE BEATEN PATH, regional history series LOST LA, the documentaries CAN WE ALL GET ALONG?, IN THE WATER; BEHIND THE LENS, HOLLYWOOD PRIEST, and more.
