Los Angeles, Calif. – Jan. 23, 2023 – PBS SoCal and KCET, Southern California’s flagship PBS organizations, announced this morning a total of 14 nominations for the 73rd Annual Golden Mike® Awards presented in-person by the Radio & Television News Association (RTNA) of Southern California on Saturday, March 25. PBS SoCal and KCET were nominated 14 times in 12 Division A categories that included Long Form Documentary, Sports Reporting, Light News Series and Best Digital News Reporting. The Golden Mike Awards is the longest running broadcast news awards show in America, and one of the most distinguished because some of the top journalists across America do the judging.

The KCET Original Emmy® award-winning environmental series EARTH FOCUS, produced in partnership with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, was nominated five times in four categories for subject matters that ranged from pollution and wildfires, to mental health and Type 2 Diabetes. Additional nominations went to the Emmy® -winning historical documentary series LOST LA (a co-production with the University of Southern California Libraries), the indigenous peoples series TENDING NATURE standalone special “Indigenous Lands Stewardship” (produced in partnership with the Autry Museum of the American West), regional insider’s guide SOCAL WANDERER, arts & culture series ARTBOUND and Emmy®-winning food series THE MIGRANT KITCHEN (produced in partnership with Life & Thyme).

 The RTNA salutes the best in broadcast journalism on an annual basis in Southern and Central California. From breaking news to documentaries, awards for outstanding work were presented to reporters, videographers, producers, writers, and managers at Radio and TV stations from San Diego to Fresno. The RTNA is a nonprofit organization representing broadcast news professionals throughout Southern California and coordinates TV pool coverage of major news events in the region, fights for freedom of information causes, and provides scholarships for the next generation of broadcast journalists.

About Earth Focus

Launched in 2007 on Link TV, EARTH FOCUS is the longest-running investigative environmental news program on U.S. television. This season, co-produced by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and from presenting sponsor Hasa International, examines the social and environmental determinants of health affecting a wide range of populations living in the United States, including farmers suffering the effects of rural isolation, warehouse workers breathing polluted air, and uninsured families dealing with the stress of paying for health care.
