Los Angeles, Calif. – Sept. 8, 2022 – PBS SoCal and KCET, Southern California’s flagship PBS stations as well as the home for award-winning, original local content, announced today a variety of digital and video resources to best inform California voters for the 2022 election this coming November including the always-popular PROPS IN A MINUTE, one of the online highlights from kcet.org’s digital destination Ballot Brief for local voters over the past five election seasons. PROPS IN A MINUTE is a series of bilingual one-minute, impartial video explanations using animation and easy-to-understand language to help voters decipher the seven complex propositions on the ballot this year. Explainers will be rolling out both online and on-air starting today, September 8 at kcet.org and pbssocal.org as well as on KCET and PBS SoCal between programs. PROPS IN A MINUTE video explainers are also available to stream on the free PBS App as well as in Spanish on KCET and PBS SoCal’s YouTube channels. Additional videos will premiere throughout the month of September.
This year’s English and Spanish videos are hosted by Emmy-nominated and AP award-winning newscaster Garin Flowers and Mexican-American Multi-Emmy award-winning journalist and author Naibe Reynoso respectively. PROPS IN A MINUTE runs voters through the key points of each proposition, utilizing fun infographics with each video addressing what a “yes” or “no” vote will mean.
The videos provide a balanced point-of-view and serve as an easy resource for SoCal residents to feel informed in this year’s election cycle. Although the number of measures voters will decide on are the fewest in an election year since 1916, this November’s propositions deal with a wide range of issues. This includes state constitutional language protecting the right to an abortion, funding for K-12 art and music education, online sports betting, clean air, dialysis clinics and more.
Also, kcet.org announced the one-stop digital voter resource where Californians can find a selection of videos, articles and explainers that break down what voters can expect to find on their election ballots called Ballot Brief. Hosting resources and election news from regional and national partners as well as local reporters, Ballot Brief offers up the latest on the seven statewide measures on the Nov. 8 ballot, useful candidate guides and information on how to find nearby polling locations. Additional resources include a downloadable printable bilingual “cheat sheet” that explains all of the key initiatives voters can expect to vote on. Additional topics for readers to look out for include voting logistics, how the proposition system works (and the complicated backstories involved), functions of certain political offices and how measures get approved for the ballot. In an effort to deliver in-depth information on key elections and political topics impacting the community, as well as online interaction and social media commentary, KCET is utilizing community listening tool Hearken to collect audience feedback to help shape supporting content in efforts to demystify ambiguity surrounding certain Props that are most confusing to SoCal voters.
In an effort to embrace young voters, KCET and The Civics Center – the national, nonpartisan nonprofit that builds the foundations for youth civic engagement and voter participation in high schools – have partnered to provide a FREE regional virtual engagement called the California Prop Party to give young people in Southern California an opportunity to get politically involved. Attendees will take an impartial look at the CA propositions highlighting the PROPS IN A MINUTE video explainers with commentary from nonpartisan experts, serving as an interactive opportunity for young voters to learn about California's proposition system and what's on their ballot this election. The California Prop Party will take place on Wed., Oct. 19 at 5 p.m.
