Youth Classical Music Competition Features Artists From Around the Globe in 'Classicalia' Premiering on PBS SoCal's YouTube Channel on Jan. 19

Los Angeles, Calif. – January 19, 2023 – PBS SoCal, the home of the entire PBS schedule and a crucial educational resource for the Southern California region, announced a special YouTube presentation of the international classical music competition for youth CLASSICALIA. Featuring performances by some of the best young musicians in the world classically trained in piano, violin, saxophone and more, the series has the young musicians competing in each of the three categories: Junior, Intermediate and Senior. Produced by PBS SoCal, the competition shines a spotlight on aspiring international classical musicians and enables talented youth the opportunity to burst into worldwide recognition. The series also aims to break down barriers to encourage innovation and reinvention within the classical music genre. Hosted by acclaimed vocalist Pia Toscano and Vienna-based singer Arabella Fenyves, CLASSICALIA will stream as ten, five-minute episodes every week starting Thurs., Jan. 19 on PBS SoCal’s YouTube channel as well as the free PBS App.

Each year, the music competition CLASSICALIA features a new cohort of award-winning young artists. The 2021/2022 finalists were selected from submissions received from around the world, the twelve globally accomplished young musicians compete in three age divisions: 11 and under, 12-17 and 18-25. Virtuosos in their own disciplines, the inaugural program welcomes contestants: opera vocalist Solène Le Van, accordionist Sofia Ros, violinist Sophia Stoyanovich, pianist Thomas Torok, saxophonist Gisela Dekort Mesalles, flutist Nikka Gershman, pianist Andrew Sijie Li, pianist Artemy Sokolovsky and pianist Ryan Huang, sibling piano duo Sophie and Alexander Wagner, pianist Sunny Ritter and violinist Shang-En Hsieh.

The winners in each category are determined by a jury of three internationally renowned musicians: Bösendorfer artist, concert pianist and educator Albert Frantz, founder and managing Director of the Vienna Mozart Orchestra and former clarinetist with the Vienna Philharmonic Gerald Grünbacher, and world-renowned concert pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico. The world-class adjudicators offer each young finalist thoughtful and instructive feedback on their individual performances for guidance to propel their musical education and aspirations.

CLASSICALIA is produced by Attila Glatz Concert Productions in partnership with well-known music educator, distinguished author and highly respected piano pedagogue, clinician and adjudicator Ella Poret, as well as President of Coopera and Operettissima Dr. Daniel Vadasz. Its goal is to make opera performances directly accessible to international audiences, which are formed during creative work of outstanding representatives of the domestic and international art world.
