Award Winning Cinematographer Roger Deakins and Composer Thomas Newman Participate in the Q&A for the ‘1917’ Screening at the KCET Cinema Series
Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC (Director of Photography), is one of today’s most honored cinematographers. He recently won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on Denis Villeneuve’s "Blade Runner 2049," for which he also won his fourth British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award and numerous critics groups awards. In 2013, Deakins was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), the only cinematographer ever bestowed with this high honor.
Roger has earned thirteen additional Oscar nominations, for Denis Villeneuve’s "Prisoners" and "Sicario"; the Coen brothers-directed films "Fargo," "The Man Who Wasn’t There," "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," "No Country for Old Men" and "True Grit;" Frank Darabont’s "The Shawshank Redemption;" Martin Scorsese’s "Kundun;" Andrew Dominik’s T"he Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford;" Stephen Daldry’s "The Reader;" Sam Mendes’ "Skyfall;" and Angelina Jolie’s "Unbroken." His numerous credits also include such diverse films as "Sid and Nancy," "Barton Fink," "The Hudsucker Proxy," "Courage Under Fire," "The Big Lebowski," "A Beautiful Mind," "Doubt" and "Hail, Caesar!" He has also served as visual consultant for several animated features, including "WALL•E", "How to Train Your Dragon," "Rango," "The Guardians," "The Croods" and "How to Train Your Dragon 2." He is also serving as a visual consultant on the upcoming animated feature "Vivo."
Thomas Newman (Composer) is one of today’s most prominent film composers. He has composed music for more than 80 motion pictures and television series’ and has earned fourteen Academy Award nominations, one Primetime Emmy Award and six Grammy Awards.
He is the youngest son of Alfred Newman (1900-1970), the longtime musical director of 20th Century Fox and the composer of scores for such films as "Wuthering Heights," "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "All About Eve." A turning point in Newman’s career took place while he was working as a musical assistant on the "1984" film, "Reckless," for which he soon was promoted to the position of composer. And so, at the age of 27, Newman successfully composed his first film score. Since then he has contributed distinctive and evocative scores to many acclaimed films, including "Desperately Seeking Susan," "The Lost Boys," "The Rapture," "Fried Green Tomatoes," "The Player," "Scent of a Woman," "Flesh and Bone," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Little Women," "American Buffalo," "The People Vs. Larry Flynt," "Oscar and Lucinda," "The Horse Whisperer," "Meet Joe Black," "American Beauty," "The Green Mile," "Erin Brockovich," "In The Bedroom," "Road to Perdition," "Finding Nemo," "Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events," "Cinderella Man," "Jarhead," "Little Children," "The Good German," "Revolutionary Road," "Wall-E," "The Help," "The Iron Lady," "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Skyfall," "Spectre," "Victoria & Abdul," "The Highwaymen," "Tolkien" and Steven Spielberg’s "Bridge of Spies." Newman also composed the music for HBO’s acclaimed 6-hour miniseries "Angels in America," directed by Mike Nichols. He received a Primetime Emmy Award for his theme for the HBO original series "Six Feet Under."
