This lecture explores how certain foods from Batanes, a remote group of islands in the northern Philippines, associated with famine have become symbols of prestige. It examines the cultural and social pressures that influence shifting values and perceptions and discusses how ethnoarchaeological methods help trace the evolving meanings and uses of these foods over time.
