J.D. Salinger Biopic ‘Rebel in the Rye’ Catches New Fans at KCET’s Cinema Series August 29

Since its publication in 1951, The Catcher in the Rye has spawned catchphrases, book-banning campaigns, unauthorized sequels and untold millions of high school English class essays. Still, there might be some facts left that weren’t covered in said English class. The film ‘Rebel in the Rye’ is based on the book J. D. Salinger: A Life about one of America’s most recognized writers. The storyline begins with the youthful Salinger and follows him through World War II, his romances and the publication of his debut novel The Catcher in the Rye. The film stars Nicholas Hoult as Salinger and the cast includes Zoey Deutch, Kevin Spacey and Sarah Paulson. The film had its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. In his directorial debut, Writer/Director Danny Strong will join KCET Cinema Series and Must See Movies host Pete Hammond for a Q&A immediately following the screening. “Rebel in the Rye” will be released in theatres by IFC Films on September 15.

“The story behind how he came to write the book is unbelievable,” Strong said at the Sundance Film Festival about J.D. Salinger and the creation of The Catcher in the Rye. “It’s this unbelievably powerful story of someone who went to war and was traumatized,” he added of the famously reclusive author of the classic American novel.
