PBS SoCal Creates STEM Library Corner at the Compton Library Through Edison International Grant
Los Angeles, July 19, 2018 – PBS SoCal recently received a $30,000 grant from Edison International, the parent company of Southern California Edison, to create a STEM Library Corner at the Compton Library. The Library Corner will become an educational hub for the community, providing iPads loaded with educational apps, as well as monthly educational services including family coding workshops and bilingual Parent Academies. The STEM Library Corner will be launched on July 26, during a ceremony at the Compton Library.
“Through our early childhood education work, we fulfill a critical need for early learning resources to serve the more than 40 percent of Southern California children that don’t attend preschool,” said Jamie Myers, PBS SoCal COO & Vice President, Education & Community Engagement. “Compton is a priority community for these services, so we are grateful to Edison International for helping us create this important dedicated STEM Library Corner at the Compton Library, where we will work with area parents and children to provide grade-appropriate STEM concepts and access to critical learning resources.”
The grant from Edison International will make possible a donation of ten iPads with cases, and a rolling case for use at the Library Corner. Each iPad will be loaded with U.S. Department of Education approved PBS Kids apps recognized to improve literacy and numeracy. A PBS SoCal Education staff member will visit the library monthly to provide additional support to those using the lab. The grant also provides supplies like STEM tool kits, invention kits, and bilingual worksheets for families and children.
