Sara Roberts' Clump and Whistle

In Partnership with Machine Project. As part of the Getty initiative Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A., Machine Project asked artists to take on the whole environment of Los Angeles and create performances shot on video and edited into short experimental films in response to notable architectural sites throughout the city.

"Clump and Whistle" is an emergent performance based on principles extrapolated from Elias Canetti's book "Crowds and Power." The book by the 1981 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, is considered a masterwork of philosophical anthropology in which Canetti examines the formation and dissolution of crowds, the manipulation of power within crowds, mass psychology, and the dynamics of social life.
