'Diane' Screens at the 2019 Spring KCET Cinema Series
Following a screening of "Diane," actor Mary Kay Place attended a Q&A hosted by Cinema Series host Pete Hammond. Generous to a fault, Diane (Mary Kay Place) spends her days checking in on sick friends, volunteering at a soup kitchen, and trying desperately to save her troubled, drug-addicted son (Jake Lacy). But Diane is haunted by a past she can’t forget and that threatens to tear apart her life. The film is directed by award-winning filmmaker Kent Jones ("Hitchcock/Truffaut," "A Letter to Elia").
Mary Kay Place received critical acclaim for her role as country singer Loretta Haggers on the hit comedy series, "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" for which she won the Emmy® for Best Supporting Actress in a comedy. In addition to her acting career, Place began working with the head writers of Maude at Norman Lear’s Tandem Productions, where she began co-writing for numerous TV series including "M*A*S*H," (for which she earned an Emmy nomination in 1973) and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," among others.
Appearing in over 50 feature films, her acting credits include "Bound For Glory," "Starting Over," "The Big Chill," "Captain Ron," "Citizen Ruth," "Manny And Lo" (for which she received a nomination from the Independent Spirit Awards), "The Rainmaker," "Being John Malkovich," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Shrek," "Forever After," "Smashed," "It’s Complicated," "The Intern," "Private Benjamin," "I’ll See You In My Dreams" and the upcoming film "State Like Sleep" as well as a film just completed by the singer/songwriter Sia.
Place can also be seen co-starring in Netflix’s "Lady Dynamite," the Bravo series "Imposters," "Grey’s Anatomy" and Matt Weiner’s new anthology series, "The Romanoffs." Other television credits include "Black-ish," HBO’s critically acclaimed series, "Big Love" (Emmy nomination), "Getting On," "Looking," "Bored To Death," "Grace and Frankie," "The New Normal," "King of the Hill," "My So-Called Life," "The West Wing" and "All In The Family." She has also directed television episodes of "Friends," HBO's "Dream On," "Arli$$," "Baby Boom" and other shows, as well as recorded three albums on Columbia Records.
