'The Highwaymen' Closes the 2019 Spring KCET Cinema Series

Following a screening of "The Highwaymen," director John Lee Hancock attended a Q&A hosted by Cinema Series host Pete Hammond. When the full force of the FBI and the latest forensic technology aren't enough to capture two of America's most wanted criminals, detectives and former Texas Rangers Frank Hamer (KCET Lumière Award recipient Kevin Costner) and Maney Gault (Woody Harrelson) use their old school skills and gut instincts to track and bring down Bonnie and Clyde. This true crime story set in the 1930s South comes from award-winning director John Lee Hancock ("Saving Mr. Banks," "The Blind Side").

John Lee Hancock has established himself as a distinctive voice in filmmaking with his ability to tell extraordinary stories on screen as a writer, director and producer. Hancock directed "The Founder" (2016), starring Michael Keaton and "Saving Mr. Banks" (2013) starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson. He also wrote and directed "The Blind Side," which was nominated for two Academy® Awards, including Best Picture, and garnered Sandra Bullock the Best Actress statuette for her portrayal of Leanne Tuohy. Hancock is also recognized for his work on "The Rookie," "Hard Time Romance," "A Perfect World," "Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil," "Snow White And The Huntsman," "The Alamo" and "My Dog Skip."

Born and raised in Longview, Texas, Hancock was surrounded by sports growing up. His father played college football for Baylor and had a brief run with the Chicago Cardinals in the NFL. Brothers Joe and Kevin played college football (at Vanderbilt and Baylor, respectively), with Kevin playing professionally for the Indianapolis Colts. When it was time for Hancock to go to college, he focused on his academics entirely. He graduated from Baylor with an English degree, as well as a law degree from Baylor’s School of Law. Hancock practiced law for four years before he found himself drawn to the world of film.
