What is the Board of Equalization?

The Board of Equalization was created in 1879. There are four members, each representing a part of California. The board used to make sure the county taxes were equally spread across the state. But after being rocked by scandal in 2017, an audit revealed the Board had mishandled funds. Soon after Governor Brown signed a law gutting the Board of Equalization. It still collects a few taxes, like the alcohol tax, but mainly reviews property tax assessments to make sure they are equal across the state. Watch the video for a quick and simple explanation.
