Low-Cost Summer 2022 Kids Programs in Central Los Angeles

As children settle into summer break, parks, recreation centers and various organizations around central Los Angeles offer low or no-cost programs to keep them moving and grooving into the new school year.

Westlake, Pico Union and Koreatown are among the neighborhoods with thehighest percentage of transit riders in Los Angeles, so finding programs close to home is essential for local families looking for summer activities for their little ones.

Find a list of summer programs that are open and enrolling new students. They include summer camps, sports teams, dance classes and more.

Please note these programs are booking up quickly. Call each center directly for up-to-date information and availability.

1. Seoul International Park (Ardmore Recreation Center)

Koreatown’s Seoul International Park offers a variety of classes through PlayLA, a program that promotes recreation in all communities with only a $10 fee per child. Programs are available for kids ages 5 to 15.

Class registration began on May 7, so families are encouraged to register as soon as possible due to limited spaces. Classes start the week of July 11 and will be in session for eight weeks. The following classes are available:

Monday

  • Flag football for kids ages 9 to 15 at 4 p.m.
  • Goalkeeper training for kids ages 9 to 15 at 5 p.m.

Tuesday

  • Basketball for kids ages 5 to 12 at 4 p.m.

Wednesday

  • Hip hop for kids ages 5 to 12 at 4 p.m.
  • Gymnastics one for kids ages 5 to 8 at 5 p.m.

Thursday

  • Volleyball for kids ages 7 to 10 at 4 p.m.

Friday

  • Ballet for kids ages 5 to 12 at 4 p.m.

Additionally, summer soccer and basketball leagues are available for the following age groups: 5 to 6, 7 to 9 and more, going up to age 15. The soccer league begins July 5, and the basketball league begins July 9. Leagues are available for kids of all ages

2. Normandie Recreation Center

Normandie Recreation Center in Harvard Heights hosts a variety of sports leagues via Girls Play Los Angeles (GPLA).The center offers a softball league from July 7 to Aug. 25 for girls ages 8 to 15 for $10 registration fee. Groups are divided by age: minors (ages 8 to 10), majors (ages 11 to 12) and juniors (ages 13 to 15).

GPLAis a program that works with young girls to promote a healthy lifestyle while helping them make friends and build self-esteem. It is a subsidized program, so girls of all communities, regardless of financial status, are invited to participate.

3. Shatto Recreation Center

Shatto Recreation Center, which sits between Wilshire Center, Little Bangladesh and Rampart Village (also known as “the whale” by residents), offers a full-sized gymnasium, an equipment room, a performance stage and more.

The center offers a variety of sports options and classes through PlayLA, such as soccer, volleyball, tennis and various levels of folclórico and Hawaiian dancing. Classes run from July 11 to Sept. 17. The registration fee is $10.

Monday

  • Soccer skills for kids ages 5 to 10 at 5:30 p.m.

Tuesday

  • Lil’ Dribblers dribbling skills for kids ages 5 to 6 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Shooting skills for kids ages 7 to 9 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Beginners tennis for kids ages 6 to 15 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Intermediate/advanced tennis for kids ages 6 to 15 at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday

  • Coed volleyball for kids ages 8 to 11 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Beginners Hawaiian dance for kids ages 6 to 15 at 6 p.m.
  • Intermediate/advanced Hawaiian dance for kids ages 6 to 15 at 7 p.m.

Thursday

  • Sports and games for kids ages 7 to 15 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Sports conditioning for kids ages 7 to 15 at 6:30 p.m.

Friday

  • Beginners folclórico for kids ages 6 to 15 at 6 p.m.
  • Intermediate/advanced folclórico for kids ages 6 to 15 at 7 p.m.

Girls Play Los Angeles at Shatto
Monday

  • Beginners ballet for girls ages 6 to 15 at 6 p.m.
  • Intermediate/advanced ballet for girls ages 6 to 15 at 7 p.m.

Thursday

  • Cheerleading for girls ages 5 to 11 at 5:30 p.m.

Fridays

  • Soccer skills for girls ages 5 to 10 at 5:30 p.m.

Shatto Recreation Center also offers:

  • A variety of GPLA fitness classes at $10 for eight weeks, from July 11 to Sept. 17.
  • A summer basketball league for a $10 fee from July 16 to Sept. 10. The age divisions are:
    • Little dribblers for kids ages 5 to 6
    • Mighty dribblers for kids ages 7 to 8
    • Minors for kids ages 9 to 10
    • Majors for kids ages 11 to 12
    • Juniors for kids ages 13 to 15
  • A summer camp for kids 6-12 from June 13 to Aug. 12, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Kids have the opportunity to go on field trips and do fun activities for a weekly fee of $30.
