What is co-playing and co-viewing?

A key feature of the Family Math — Play & Learn app is its focus on creating a shared learning experience between adults and children. This approach, known as co-playing and co-viewing, involves engaging with digital media together, much like reading a book.

This kind of shared learning experience offers many benefits:

  • Makes learning more engaging and enjoyable for both children and adults
  • Encourages discussion and interaction, helping build important language skills
  • Strengthens the adult-child relationship and creates meaningful quality time
When adults actively play or watch alongside their learner, it enriches the child's learning experience while strengthening their connection.

What does this look like in practice?

Here are simple strategies to support your learner while playing and watching:

  • Let the child lead. Follow their interests and curiosities. Ask:
    • “Which game do you like best? Why?” or “Show me your favorite game.”
  • Label what you see on screen to support vocabulary development. For example:
    • “I see a long rectangle.”
    • “That pizza is shaped like a circle. When cut, it becomes a triangle.”
  • Ask open-ended questions. You can say:
    • “Can you tell me about this game?”
    • “What do you think will happen if…”
  • Make real-world connections. Ask:
    • “Can you find something like this in our home/classroom?”
    • “Can you think of foods we eat that are the same color?”
  • Extend the learning beyond the screen by trying a related activity after playing. You can say:
    • “Let’s go on a scavenger hunt to find shapes like the ones we saw in the video.”
  • Encourage active participation while watching. For example:
    • “They’re counting up from one to five. Let’s sing and count with them.”
    • “How many spoons do you see on the table? Let’s count!”
  • Practice taking turns during play to build cooperation skills. You can say:
    • “Let’s take turns playing this game. You go first, then it’s my turn.”
