FOR PARENTS: Celebrating Birthdays and Holidays During Social Distancing
Just as our day-to-day life has changed entirely under stay-at-home orders, celebrations have also taken new shape under social distancing recommendations. But that's not to say our children can't continue celebrating birthdays, holidays and other milestones — in fact, this time could be an opportunity to start new traditions.
Activities
Paint With Nature
If the weather allows, get outside and have fun with nature, using natural objects (leaves, flowers, or anything else!) as brushes or stamps to paint creative art projects. As you and your child paint and stamp, encourage your child to observe and notice the characteristics of the items you discovered in your backyard or neighborhood. How do they look similar or different? How do they feel?
Math Magic Tricks
Would mind reading be a helpful skill for the Cyberchase team deciphering poems to free Lady Ada Lovelace? Show your child you can "read minds" and help them sharpen their math skills and with three magic tricks in this activity!
Lesson Plans
Health and Wellness | Family and Community Learning
Just as Curious George explores preparing food and our Sesame Street special talks about staying healthy, this lesson will help families explore nutrition, learn about healthy food choices and work together to prepare a treat that is both sweet and nutritious. Can your child guess what the treat will be?
Clifford the Big Red Dog Programming
What are some ways we can show we care for our friends and family, even from afar? Educators are encouraged to think of creative ways to enhance or supplement each lesson, perhaps completing one part per day, to help their students develop social-emotional skills vital to being a good neighbor, family member and friend.
At-Home Learning Tips
Being a Good Neighbor
Being asked to stay home from school may give rise to feelings of isolation or loneliness but there are plenty of things you can do with your children to help them feel like they are still connecting with — and contributing to — the world around them. Check out some of our ideas on how to be a good neighbor, including something as sweet as writing positive chalk messages on the sidewalk or as impactful as making cloth face masks for healthcare workers.
