Born and raised in Los Angeles, Monica Majoli is internationally celebrated for work that uses representations of sexuality to examine broader cultural and social forces. Primarily working across drawing, painting and printmaking, her practice treats the body as a political site that is shaped by history. In her robust studies of gay and lesbian visual culture, she renders the body as intimately known and enigmatic at the same time. Majoli's new drawings are inspired by the Ovulars and depict women in the act of creating together. P
Presented in flat files housed within the Mazer Lesbian Archives, the unframed drawings will be handled by visitors directly and shown alongside materials documenting the artist’s time conducting research across the country. Additionally, Majoli has curated objects from the archives’ holdings of Sisterhood Bookstore. Operating for nearly three decades in Westwood until its closure in 1999, the bookstore was a gathering space in which Majoli first encountered images of lesbians living full, autonomous lives. Sisterhood Bookstore provided a formative encounter that would shape both Majoli’s sense of self and her artistic practice for decades to come.
