What Will A Family's Weekly Food Expenditure Get You In L.A.?
When I stumbled across these new stats on how much the average American family spends on a week's worth of groceries, I couldn't help but think, "Who cares about those average American families? I am but one person living in a metropolis!" Such are the trials and tribulations of narcissism.
And then I began to think, man, that's probably a lot of In-N-Out burgers. So let's have a little fun with the $151.00 that an American family supposedly spends on a weekly basis for foodstuffs by going through 25 iconic dishes and/or restaurants throughout L.A. and see how far those fifteen sawbucks and eight bits (go ahead, do the calculations yourselves) would get you around these parts.
The list:
- 23.23 Beef French Dip Sandwiches from Philippe's
- 21.39 Small (that's 3.5 ounces worth) Beef French Dip Sandwiches from Cole's
- 100.66 Tacos from Taco Zone
- 9.38 Herb Specials (½ chicken and two waffles) at Roscoe's Chicken N' Waffles
- 16.87 Dozens of Donuts from Randy's
- 23.34 Double-Double Meals at In-N-Out
- 1.51 week-long CSAs from the South Central Farmer's Co-op

- 23.23 of the Priciest Beers (and there's a bunch of them) over at Mohawk Bend
- 43.14 beers of whatever-they-got at dive bar extraordinaire Smog Cutter
- 1.59 helpings of the famous (and way over the top) Macaroni and Cheese dish from Mélisse
- 15.89 Oinkster Pastrami sandwiches from, well, The Oinkster
- 3.87 Lawry Cut Steak Dinners at Lawry's Steakhouse in Beverly Hills
- 29.04 Bacon Chili Cheese Dogs from Pink's Hot Dogs
- 9.44 Black Forbidden Rice rolls from Yamashiro

- 35.53 Sharp Chedder Grilled Cheese Sandwiches from The Grilled Cheese Truck
- 25.12 orders of Kogi Sliders from The Kogi Truck
- 13.87 Cali California Omelettes from Fred 62's
- 15.16 Breakfast Burritos from Cafe 101
- 30.26 Dozens of Specialty Cookies from Porto's Bakery in Burbank
That, my friends, is certainly a lot of beers over at Smog Cutter. (Not including the tips, of course.) So, in the end, what does all of this information tell us? Not a whole lot, other than families would be wise to spend their money on, well, not a bunch of the same item. Because that's ridiculous and surely cannot be good for one's health.
The more you know!
