What to Watch With Passport: Marble Hall Murders - Marlow Murder Club - Ages of Ice - Ghost in the Machine
Welcome to your every-other-week Passport newsletter. We have some big questions this time around: What's the singularity? What's happening with the planet's ice? Which delightful murder mystery should you watch first?
The choice is yours.
Here are some shows you can watch right now:
MARBLE HALL MURDERS Susan Ryeland Mystery, Episode 3
No one could ever think of harming the children's book author Miriam Crace. She was loved by millions. But here we are: death by wolfsbane tea. We've reached the final season of the two ... two ... TWO-timelines-in-one trilogy by Anthony Horowitz. Susan Ryeland is back in England and she's editing once again. But fear not! You'll still get those occasional island vibes: the story she's editing is set in Corfu. This time, the story isn't finished - you get to see it crafted as you go. How is she editing a new Atticus Pünd mystery when the author was killed at the start of season one? Guess you'll just have to watch to find out ...
MARLOW MURDER CLUB Season 3
No one could ever think of harming the mayor of Marlow. He was just so lovable. But here we are: death by wolfsbane tea. No, you're not having déjà vu. Apparently, the writers of this month's mysteries were drinking from the same teapot. But I assure you they are both well worth watching. More important, our favorite lovable busybodies - Judith, Suzie and Becks - are back and here to save the day. They're technically there to help the police, but racing ahead to gather clues before the officers arrive IS helpful, right? The list of suspects runs the gamut from a real estate developer to a podcaster with a poison garden.
AGES OF ICE Science & Nature
"Oh, no way. NO WAY would I do that." Chances are, you're going to be saying that a lot watching this series. But you're also going to be saying, "That is SO beautiful! I WISH I could do that!" Hang over the edge of an ice sheet in Greenland, surrounded by white as far as the eye can see, while suspended over a monstrous rush of impossibly blue-green water. Hike across one of the most hostile environments on the planet. Search for a river under a mile of ice. Change your socks once a week. And all to answer the question: what exactly is happening to the glaciers of the world? And it turns out, they're not doing what we expected.
INDEPENDENT LENS Ghost in the Machine
You hear about this new thing called AI? Word is it will save humanity ... or maybe destroy it. This story starts with Tay, the Microsoft chatbot from 2016 that was allowed in public for a mere 16 hours. I confess I was skeptical when I first heard this documentary's claim that the seeds of AI can be traced back to Francis Galton, the originator of eugenics. But the filmmakers show a pretty impressive trail of receipts. And they ask some very serious questions about the claims being made about AI today. Hear the voices of everyone from Isaac Asimov to Sam Altman. Prepare to ponder the fate of the world.
