Los Angeles, Calif. – June 4, 2024 PBS SoCal Southern California’s flagship PBS organization, announced today 23 nominations for the 76th Annual Los Angeles Area Emmy® Awards presented by the Television Academy, more than any other LA-based broadcast organizations. The 23 nominations for 10 different programs/series produced as either PBS SoCal or KCET (now called PBS SoCal Plus) productions and were spread across 12 different categories. The locally produced content/productions were recognized in a variety of categories that ranged from “L.A. Local Color” to “Live Special Events” and “Education/Information” to “Crime/Social Issues.” All 33 categories will be presented during a ceremony on Sat., July 27 at the Four Seasons Hotel Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, hosted by award-winning journalist Michaela Pereira.

The award-winning, locally produced original arts and culture series ARTBOUND received the most nominations with 10 in total, highlighting a variety of season 14 episodes. Nominees included an examination of two Chinatown restaurants that became the implausible heart of L.A.’s burgeoning punk scene in the 1970s called “Chinatown Punk Wars,” a look at the murals of David Alfaro Siqueiros in “América Tropical: The Martyr Mural of Siqueiros,” the impact of a revered regional publisher in ““Angel City Press: L.A. Through the Pages” and the birth of affirmative action policies to increase the enrollment of students of color from UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television in “L.A. Rebellion: A Cinematic Movement” as well as digital content “Little Amal.”

Five nominations went to the four-episode series 10 DAYS IN WATTS from actor and filmmaker Raphael Sbarge (Once Upon a Time, Murder in the First) following an urban garden set to open in the community of Watts, built and nurtured by dedicated residents who saw more than economic hardship, social inequality and environmental racism in their future. The series chronicles three generations of activists in the Watkins family, as well as students, farmers, and community leaders committed to healing past social injustices.

Additional nominations also went to PBS SoCal content that included specials the 2023 MEDIA ACCESS AWARDS with Easterseals, the L.A. COUNTY HOLIDAY CELEBRATION (for their live 64th annual concert in December of 2023), and BONNIE BOSWELL PRESENTS “Saving Moms,” along with the digital series HIP HOP AND THE METAVERSE and documentaries EVERYBODY DANCE, HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT GREG? A JOURNEY THROUGH ALZHEIMER’S, MEMORIAL DAY MASSACRE: WORKERS DIE, FILM BURIED as well as the WEEKLY ARTS digital series.
