Spanish Drama 'La Otra Mirada' Makes U.S. Broadcast TV Debut As PBS SoCal and KCET Announce Hispanic Heritage Month Programming Lineup for 2022

Los Angeles, Calif. – August 22, 2022 – PBS SoCal and KCET, Southern California’s flagship PBS stations as well as the home for award-winning, original local content, announced today specially curated programs to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 -October 15) recognizing the influence and culturally significant contributions from diverse Latinx communities around the world that have shaped our history. Several new Hispanic Heritage Month offerings will debut during the months of September and October on KCET and PBS SoCal including 13 episodes of the new scripted Spanish drama series LA OTRA MIRADA. Set in 1920s Seville, a woman with a mysterious past flees to a young girls' academy with a secret goal related to the academy itself. This acclaimed new series portrays the journey of brave women finding their own voices and debuts Tues., Sept. 20 at 10 p.m. on KCET.
Another highlight of the Hispanic Heritage Month schedule includes a new episode of KCET’s Original award-winning arts and culture series ARTBOUND that highlights Latinx artists rafa esparza, Beatriz Cortez, Patrick Martinez, Guadalupe Rosales, Gabriella Sanchez and Gabriela Ruiz who have been taking center stage at international art fairs, showing at high-end art galleries, as well as exhibiting at museums in order to secure their place in the story of American art. The new ARTBOUND documentary will debut Wed., Oct. 12 at 9 p.m. on KCET. While the new feature length documentary SINGING OUR WAY TO FREEDOM is a multilayered portrait of musician and community activist Ramon “Chunky” Sanchez whose music inspired the Chicano civil rights movement premieres Sun., Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. on KCET. Additional highlights on KCET include encore episodes of KCET Original programs BROKEN BREAD, IN CONCERT AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL, ARTBOUND and THE MIGRANT KITCHEN, all focused on celebrating Latin culture.
PBS SoCal will host a “double header” on Mon., Oct. 3 starting at 9 p.m. featuring the national premieres of two new baseball documentaries with Latinx themes slated to be broadcast on PBS stations across the country. First up is AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: “Roberto Clemente” which presents an intimate and revealing portrait of a man whose passion and grace made him a legend. The program is followed by POV’s “The Last Out” which follows three Cuban baseball players who leave their families and risk exile to chase their dreams of playing in the United States.
Fri., Sept. 30 marks the debut of the 35th annual HISPANIC HERITAGE AWARDS commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month including performances and appearances by some of the country's most celebrated Hispanic artists and visionaries. PBS SoCal’s lineup also includes encores of beloved past Latin-themed favorites including AMERICAN MASTERS: “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It” and GREAT PERFORMANCES: “Roots of Latin Jazz.”
Finally, with a broadcast premiere of Sat., Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. on PBS SoCal and Wed., Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.on KCET, viewers can watch or stream THE 37th ANNUAL IMAGEN AWARDS administered by the Imagen Foundation, an organization dedicated to encouraging and recognizing the accurate and meaningful portrayals of Latinas and Latinos in the entertainment industry. The awards will be filmed at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes on October 2.
Included in the lineup of Hispanic Heritage Month are the following series, specials and documentaries that will telecast as follows (subject to change):
KITCHENISTAS – Wed., Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. on KCET
A Latina-led movement to raise the health, wellbeing and resilience of women in San Diego County has inspired more than 275 program graduates, called "Kitchenistas", to overcome systemic barriers in bringing high-quality food solutions into their homes, schools and city.
THE MIGRANT KITCHEN – Sun., Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. on KCET
In American restaurants, immigrants are the backbone of the kitchen. Stories include Guatemalan brothers who bring indispensable knowledge and skill to two Los Angeles institutions, Providence and Connie and Ted’s. Meanwhile, the Filipino food movement finds chefs of various backgrounds and professional levels embracing tradition, forming community and pushing forward the cuisine of their heritage together. Through perseverance and entrepreneurial efforts, two Mexican families strive to create a better life and legacy for their families after immigrating to the United States.
SINGING OUR WAY TO FREEDOM – Sun., Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. on KCET and Fri., Sept. 30 at 8 p.m. on PBS SoCal
Learn about the life and music of Ramon "Chunky" Sanchez, from his humble beginnings as a farmworker in Blythe, California to the dramatic moment when he received one of our nation's highest musical honors at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Chunky's arc of transformation from marginalized farm kid to charismatic social activist shows how one person can mobilize people to change the world.
THE MIGRANT KITCHEN "Alta California” – Sun., Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. on KCET
A collective of culturally connected, distinguished chefs (including Ray Garcia of Broken Spanish, Wes Avila of Guerilla Tacos, Carlos Salgado of Taco Maria, as well as Jorge Gaviria of corn purveyor, Masienda) work to preserve heritage and push forward the “Alta California” Mexican food movement. By celebrating those dishes and ingredients integral to Mexico's cuisine and its economy, a group of accomplished Mexican-American chefs are working to elevate not only the food, but what people of their heritage can achieve in the food business.
WONDERS OF MEXICO: “Forests of the Maya” – Sun. Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. on KCET
In Mexico's far south lies an unusual peninsula: The Yucatan. The Yucatan Peninsula relies on powerful weather systems that develop thousands of miles away in the Atlantic Ocean. As the seasons change, we witness how the vital rains affect all life on the Peninsula.
LA OTRA MIRADA: “Tobacco, Pants and Jazz” – Tues., Sept. 20 at 10 p.m. on KCET – Series Premiere! 12 Additional episodes air weekly at this day/time.
The Spanish series follows a group of courageous young women in a finishing school in Seville, Spain during the 1920s. In the debut episode, Teresa follows a lead to a young girls' academy in Seville after the mysterious murder of the Spanish ambassador in Lisbon and decides to pose as a teacher and applies for a place at the academy.
IN CONCERT AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL: “Hecho En Mexico” – Wed., Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. on KCET
Featuring Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil performing Marquez’s El Nereidas de Dimas. Featuring Rodrigo y Gabriela, Natalia Lafourcade as well as Los Angeles Azules with YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles).
ARTBOUND: “LA Raza” – Wed., Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. on KCET
In East Los Angeles during the late 1960s and 1970s, a group of young activists used creative tools like writing and photography as a means for community organizing, providing a platform for the Chicano Movement in the form of the bilingual newspaper/magazine La Raza. In the process, the young activists became artists themselves and articulated a visual language that shed light on the daily life, concerns and struggles of the Mexican-American experience in Southern California and provided a voice to the Chicano Rights Movement.
BROKEN BREAD: “Tijuana” – Sun., Sept. 25 at 5:30 p.m. on KCET
Roy Choi explores Tijuana’s incredible variety of nightlife, street food, restaurants and cultural diversity along one of the most misunderstood stretches of the U.S./Mexico border. Often painted as a place of violence and poverty, Roy’s experience is totally different as he visits alongside Mexican punk rock band Tijuana No! and Chef José Figueroa.
WONDERS OF MEXICO: “Mountain Worlds” – Sun., Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. on KCET
Mexico is a vast country, dominated by a great chain of mountains, the Sierra Madre. Journey down this rocky spine and viewers will discover an amazing diversity of life and culture.
GREAT PERFORMANCES: “John Leguizamo’s Road to Broadway” – Wed., Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. on KCET
Follow John Leguizamo's path to the Great White Way with his latest theatrical showcase, "Latin History for Morons," a comedic yet pointed look at the systematic repression of Hispanic culture throughout American history.
ARTBOUND: “Con Safos” – Wed., Sept. 28 at 9 p.m. on KCET
A pioneer of Chicano rock 'n' roll, ‘Con Safos’ (‘With Respect') is a tribute to Rubén Funkahuatl Guevara who recounts his youthful experiences in Santa Monica during the 1940s which prepared him for early success in the music world. The film spans his time as lead singer of the Frank Zappa-inspired band Ruben and the Jets, his collaborations with Cheech and Chong, his crossover into the Chicano art world of the 1960s and 1970s, and his unique influence on Mexican American culture.
AMERICAN MASTERS: “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It” – Thurs, Sept. 29 at 9 p.m. on PBS SoCal and Sat., Oct. 1 at 9:30 p.m. on KCET
Discover how Rita Moreno defied her humble upbringing and racism to become one of a select group of Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award winners. Explore her 70-year career with new interviews, clips of her iconic roles and scenes of the star on set today.
35th ANNUAL HISPANIC HERITAGE AWARDS – Fri., Sept. 30 at 9 p.m. on PBS SoCal and Wed., Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. on KCET
Celebrate the recipients of the 35th annual Hispanic Heritage Awards. The evening commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month includes performances and appearances by some of the country's most celebrated Hispanic artists and visionaries.

Sheila E. hosts a celebration of rhythms of Latin music with the Raices Jazz Orchestra and performances by GRAMMY-winning artists including Richard Bona and Anaadi.
GREAT PERFORMANCES: “Gloria Estefan: Sangre Yoruba” – Fri., Sept. 30 at 11 p.m. on PBS SoCal
Singer Gloria Estefan explores three of Brazil's most influential cities and looks at the origins of its music through its people.

5-year-old Rosie Fuentes, a bilingual Mexican-American girl from suburban Texas, is just beginning to learn about how the great, big, fascinating world works around her.
AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: Roberto Clemente – Mon., Oct. 3 at 9 p.m. on PBS SoCal
The documentary presents an intimate and revealing portrait of a man whose passion and grace made him a legend. An in-depth look at the exceptional baseball player and committed humanitarian who challenged racial discrimination to become baseball’s first Latino superstar. Featuring interviews with Pulitzer Prize-winning authors David Maraniss and George F. Will, Clemente’s wife Vera, Baseball Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda, and former teammates.
POV: “The Last Out” – Mon., Oct. 3 at 10 p.m. on PBS SoCal and Sat., Oct. 8 p.m. on KCET
Three Cuban baseball players leave their families and risk exile to chase their dreams of playing in the United States. Learn of their harrowing journey, from immigration obstacles to the broken promises of dubious agents. Against all odds, these young athletes try to hold onto their hope while fighting for a better life for their families.

Latinx artists have been taking center stage at international art fairs, showing at high-end art galleries, as well as exhibiting at museums. This episode follows noted artists rafa esparza, Beatriz Cortez, Patrick Martinez, Guadalupe Rosales, Gabriella Sanchez and Gabriela Ruiz working in Los Angeles to secure their place in the story of American art as they explore notions of identity, language, immigration, queerness, religious and Aztec iconography and capitalism.

Celebrate Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) - the multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pray for and to remember friends and family members who have died.
THE 37th ANNUAL IMAGEN AWARDS – Sat., Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. on PBS SoCal and Wed., Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. on KCET
Recognizing and encouraging the entertainment industry to portray the Latino and Latina community in an accurate and meaningful manner, this year’s nominees reflect impactful storytelling, performances, writing, and creative expression across the television and film genres. The award ceremony was filmed on Sunday, October 2, in Los Angeles at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes.
