Iconic hug photo from 1948 World Series, a symbol against racism
It was the photo of a hug between two Cleveland Indians teammates after winning Game 4 of the 1948 World Series, that you might say went viral in its day. The hug was between Polish American pitcher Steve Gromek, a Hamtramck native, and outfielder Larry Doby, the second Black player to break baseball’s color barrier. One Detroit’s Bill Kubota examines the controversy over the photo.
