The Great Muslim American Road Trip

The Tragedy of the Tulsa Massacre

A visit to Oklahoma takes Mona and Sebastian to Reconciliation Park near the site of the 1921 Tulsa Massacre. Horrors routinely visited on African Americans in the early 1920s led many to look to the east, where Muslims were rulers and agents of their own destinies. In various forms of Islam, they found a path for psychological liberation from the oppression and internalized racism of Jim Crow.
