Adapted for television from the four novels by Paul Scott, "The Raj Quartet", The Jewel in the Crown is set in India in the last uneasy years of British rule, when rioting and violence heralded the granting of independence. It is the story of the men and women of both ruling and ruled classes, trying amidst the turmoil to come to terms with the drastic changes taking place around them.
