Atrip to an uninhabited island in the East River. In 2008, photographer Christopher Payne got permission from the New York City Parks Department to make repeated trips to North Brother Island, which closed to visitors in 1963. Payne’s book of photographs, North Brother Island: The Last Unknown Place in New York City documents the island’s return to nature.
